Immigration is one of our country’s proudest legacies – and yet is now also a critical humanitarian and political issue. Over the last two years, we have heard from clients, colleagues, and friends who want to make a difference. As a firm, we believe in supporting community engagement in and dialogue about difficult topics. And as we do when guiding clients through difficult situations, first we get to know the issue, and then we develop a plan.

For this reason, we’re proud to be sponsoring two upcoming events that discuss immigration and the challenges we all face in handling integration.

Special Work-in-Progress Fundraising
Screening of A Place to Breathe

We are proud to co-sponsor a fundraising event with the Community Bank of the Bay to help local filmmakers finish their work on A PLACE TO BREATHE, a film exploring immigration and health care in Oakland. Join us at the reception and short screening to learn how you can make a difference in helping finance their PBS-destined documentary. It discusses what is needed in the here and now to provide medically essential and culturally responsive, trauma-informed care.

There will be a reception, a Q&A with the filmmakers, and an opportunity to meet key players at Oakland’s Street Level Health Project, one of the two clinics featured in the film.

Dear America: An Interview with Jose Antonio Vargas
Interviewed by Kate Campbell King

For the third year in a row our founding partner Kate Campbell King will be leading a session at the Bay Area Book Festival. This year, she’ll be interviewing Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Jose Antonio Vargas. His work illuminates the purgatory of fear that people without papers are forced to live in and poses questions about passing and the true meaning of citizenship. His story and perspective provide a particularly bittersweet contrast between our country’s long heritage of welcoming and integrating immigrants and the current environment of hostility.

We are proud to be sponsors of the festival and encourage you to join us for Kate’s free session and to explore the other insightful talks the festival has to offer.
